How does a Geothermal system work?

A Geothermal heat pump operates in the same manner as a traditional heat pump. The difference is that a traditional heat pump uses the outside air around it as the heating and cooling source, whereas a Geothermal heat pump uses water through a series of loop systems underground. The heat transfer is done directly through the ground, which remains at a constant 55 degrees.

What are the benefits of using a Geothermal heat pump vs. a traditional heating system?

Are there any tax incentives when installing a Geothermal heat pump system?

Delmarva Power in the state of Delaware currently offers a grant through the Green Energy Program. The grant helps to offset the cost of installation by allowing $800 per ton for the first two tons and $700 per ton for the third ton and beyond, with a maximum grant of $5000. Customers/contractors applying for the grant must fill out the initial grant application and turn it in to the Division of Energy and Climate prior to installation.
